Youth Engagement Council

We are launching the pilot year of our new Youth Engagement Council this November!

We are looking for young people ages 16-22 who are passionate about volunteering, community involvement, and community partnerships to help us develop our youth engagement strategy.

What is the Youth Engagement Council?

The Youth Engagement Council will be a group of 4-8 individuals aged 16-22. The purpose of the council is to:

  • Begin to engage youth in the development and implementation of Volunteer Sudbury/Bénévolat Sudbury’s Youth Engagement Strategy, and;

  • Advise VBS on the development of youth-relevant programs and policies, and;

  • Encourage youth volunteerism in the City of Greater Sudbury, and;

  • Advise VBS on the development of future youth-led volunteer programs

We aim to gain insight from young volunteers in our city on how to best interact with youth so we may promote volunteerism, as is our vision, in an effective way to the younger members of our community.

What being a member of the Youth Engagement Council will mean for you:

  • An opportunity to affect programming directly involving the youth within our community

  • Experience organizing and setting up a program for volunteers

  • Exposure to policy writing

  • Collaboration with like-minded young people within your community

  • Meet new people

  • Be a representative of Greater Sudbury youth

If this is something that interests you, please see below how you can get involved!

What is Required of Members?

The 2020-2021 pilot year of the program will run from November - April. Members of the council will be expected to:

  • Attend 2 hour meetings (approximately), beginning with an orientation in November, followed by monthly meetings beginning in January and continuing through until April. This leads to a commitment of approximately 10 volunteer hours for the first year

    • Meetings, for the time being, will be hosted through Zoom and using other online software until it is safe to meet in person

    • High school students are encouraged to submit forms to us for their required 40 hours for graduation and to track their hours through our online database

  • Contribute equally to discussions, planning, events, and more through the council

  • When and where applicable, promote Volunteer Sudbury and Volunteer Sudbury events within their school and community when needed

  • Bring enthusiasm, ideas, and knowledge of young people to every meeting!

Members will be invited to remain on the council for up to three consecutive terms (years) as long as they continue to meet the age eligibility requirement.

How Do You Sign Up? Who is Eligible?

There are only three requirements to be eligible to join our Youth Engagement Council:

  • As of December 31st, 2020, you must be between the ages of 16 and 22

  • You must reside, or attend school, in the City of Greater Sudbury or Manitoulin District

  • You must submit a complete application

We want our council to be inclusive, and will consider everyone who applies that is within our eligibility requirements. We encourage everyone who is interested, regardless of personal background or situations, to apply. We are ready to make any accommodations necessary to meeting locations and activities to remove barriers for individuals.

If you are interested in joining our council, we ask that you submit a completed application form before the deadline. Applications for the 2020-2021 term will open on Monday, September 21, 2020, and will close at 11:59pm on Monday, October 12, 2020. The application form during that period can be found at the bottom of this page. Applications will be reviewed by a Selection Committee, and applicants could be asked to participate in a phone screening or informal interview if it is needed. All applicants can expect to hear a final decision by the week of November 9 at the latest. The first meeting will be held between November 23 - November 30, 2020, according to the availability of selected council members.
