Youth Engagement Council

Our council is composed of youth who are passionate about volunteering, community involvement, and community partnerships. Together, we will work toward  developing a youth engagement strategy.

Accomplishments of the 2020-2021 Council​

  • Had a successful launch of the council

  • Ran a contest on social media to encourage engagement

  • Secured over $1,000 in sponsorships from local businesses and organizations

  • Reached out to all high schools in the City of Greater Sudbury

  • Invited multiple guest speakers to speak to youth in the community through our social media accounts

What is the Youth Engagement Council?

The Youth Engagement Council is a group of 16 individuals aged 16-25. The purpose of the council is to:​

  • Advise VBS on the development of youth-relevant programs and policies, and;

  • Encourage youth volunteerism in the City of Greater Sudbury, and;

  • Provide youth with educational workshops that will lend a hand in developing new skills and;

  • Advise VBS on the development of future youth-led volunteer programs

The Youth Engagement Council's mission is to educate the youth in our community on the benefits of volunteerism and to implement empowering, as well as enjoyable, programming that is accessible to youth within Greater Sudbury.

What being a member of the Youth Engagement Council would mean for you:​

  • An opportunity to affect programming directly involving the youth within our community

  • Experience organizing and setting up a program for volunteers

  • Collaboration with like-minded young people within your community

  • Meet new people

  • Be a representative of Greater Sudbury youth

What is Required of Members?

The 2021-2022 term will run from September 2021 - April 2022. Members of the council are expected to:​

  • Attend 2 hour meetings (approximately), beginning with an orientation in September, followed by weekly meetings beginning in September and continuing through until April. This leads to a commitment of approximately 10 volunteer hours per month:

    • Meetings, for the time being, will be hosted through Zoom and using other online software until it is safe to meet in person

    • High school students are encouraged to submit forms to us for their required 40 hours for graduation and to track their hours through our online database

  • Contribute equally to discussions, planning, events, and more through the council

  • When and where applicable, promote Volunteer Sudbury and Volunteer Sudbury events within their school and community when needed

  • Bring enthusiasm, ideas, and knowledge of young people to every meeting

 

​Members will be invited to reapply for the council for up to three consecutive terms (years) as long as they continue to meet the age eligibility requirement.

How Do You Sign Up? Who is Eligible?

There are only three requirements to be eligible to join our Youth Engagement Council:​

  • As of December 31st of the year you are applying, you must be between the ages of 16 and 25

  • You must reside, or attend school, in the City of Greater Sudbury or Manitoulin District

  • You must submit a complete application

Applications for the 2021 - 2022 council are available through the Volunteer Sudbury database from May 5th to August 19th 2021. Candidates will be notified in August if they are selected for an interview. Selected council members will be invited to begin their term in September 2021.
